Do you know the difference between a deadlock and a deadlatch? Here at Robinson Locksmiths based in Hailsham and serving the areas of Heathfield, Polegate and Uckfield, we are aiming to demystify this vitally important area. The age, style, construction and location of your property will significantly influence the kind of security measures that you will need not only to satisfy insurance issues but also and perhaps more importantly to keep you and your family safe by maximising security. Exterior Door Locks Here, you will need to consider the construction of the door, whether wood or UPVC and the type of the door, for example patio or French doors. Five-lever mortice deadlock This is perhaps the most common lock and it is a standard deadlock. It only offers moderate protection and is lockable from either side and can be used with a nightlatch for added security. The locking mechanism is “morticed” (embedded) into a slot in the door and the strike plate is fitted to the door frame and a key is always needed to operate the lock. It’s interesting to note that the face plate of the locking mechanism will usually denote how many levers the lock has. This is a very common lock for a wooden door. Five-lever mortice deadlock conforming to BS3621 This is similar to the above but has extra security features built into the design including hardened steel plates and anti-pick features. It is important to note that UPVC and aluminium doors and often composite doors cannot be fitted with this type of lock. The lock will be stamped with the British Standard 3621 Kitemark, normally on the face plate of the locking mechanism. Key-operated multi-point locking system This provides for a high level of security as it bolts the door into the frame and locks at multiple points at the turn of a key. There are a minimum of three locking points that all lock simultaneously with the turn of a key. These types of locks can be found in modern houses and they are very suitable for UPVC and composite doors including patio and French doors. You will find that you are able to lock your door more securely from the inside. Rim automatic deadlatch with key locking handles This is mounted on the inside of the door and a cylinder within the lock connects to the keyhole on the outside of the door. These are usually used as an extra security measure and not as a main locking mechanism. With this type of lock the door is locked and unlocked by key from either side. Most Burglars Gain Access To Your Property Through a Door Home safety and security should be one of your top priorities. The UK Police website states that Homes with no security measures in place are five times more likely to be burgled than those with simple security measures. Strong deadlocks on doors and good window locks can make a huge difference in preventing a burglar from gaining access to your property. UK Burglary statistics report that in 72% of cases the burglar will gain entry to your property through a door and in 15% of these cases the door is actually unlocked. In 27% of burglaries the door lock is forced to open the door. Carry Out Regular Door Checks Many burglars come through doors and so it’s important that your doors are strong and secure. Doors are easy things to take for granted but you should carry out regular checks of the following: Alignment Hinges Swelling Frames Hardware (Locks and Handles) Alignment Alignment problems often occur in UPVC doors which are heavy and this can eventually impact on the locking mechanism. Ensure that your doors are still neatly aligned and can be easily locked. Hinges Check door hinges regularly to make sure that they are secure. Weathering and dirt can cause hinges to rust and break. This is less likely in house doors which are used regularly but quite common in outbuildings, sheds and garages which may remain unopened for weeks and even months on end. It’s a good idea to keep hinges oiled which can save on replacement in the long term. Swelling Swelling is caused by seasonal changes which cause alterations to the inside humidity which leads to wooden doors expanding and contracting. Check where the door is swollen and sand lightly if possible. Check for loose screws and hinges and tighten and oil where necessary. Door Frames Swollen, warped or cracked door frames can prevent a door from not only opening and closing but also from being locked. There are many factors that contribute to the deterioration of a door frame including age, misuse, moisture and temperature changes. Again ensure that frames are checked regularly. Locks and Handles Locks and handles are the most stressed and used parts of the door hardware and are thus prone to failure and over time they will simply wear out and need repairing or replacing. Door handles can become loose and insecure and may fall off to reveal the spindle or they may fail internally whereby the spindle is no longer engaged when the handle is turned. In both scenarios the handle will need replacing. Why do locks break? Why a door lock has failed is not always straightforward and there could be any number of reasons. The key snaps in the lock The lock seizes up The locking mechanism breaks internally (whole or part) For broken handles and locks, it is important that you have them repaired quickly and calling your local recommended locksmith is the best course of action. How To Ensure It’s Only Santa That Comes Into Your Home This Christmas How To Ensure It’s Only Santa That Comes Into Your Home This Christmas It’s not long to go until the festive period and here at Robinson Locksmiths based in Hailsham and helping the communities in Heathfield, Eastbourne and Polegate in East Sussex, we want your home to be as secure as possible. We don’t want it to be a happy and prosperous time for burglars. Here are a few of our tips for keeping your home as secure as possible during the holiday time. Burglars know that a lot of homes can be left empty as it’s a time when you could be shopping, visiting family and attending parties – a time when your house is perfect for the opportunist thief. Don’t Have Presents on Display Christmas is a time for giving presents, some of which could be gadgets and expensive gifts. If you have children, you will probably have presents hidden but if not, don’t have them displayed under the tree in one place. How easy would it be for an intruder to gather all the gifts quickly? Stow presents in cupboards or under beds so that they are not on display. Make Your House Look As Though It Is Occupied If you are going away over the Christmas period, try to make it look as though your house is not empty. Have lights on timers or ask a neighbour to come in and switch them on. Talking of neighbours, ask them to keep an eye on your property and perhaps park one of their cars or a guests in your driveway. Don’t Leave Notes That You “Are Not In” You will probably be having more deliveries than usual. Don’t be tempted to leave notes saying, “Not in – please leave parcel in the shed.” It’s a much better idea to get in touch with the parcel delivery company and get them to leave your parcel with a neighbour or place of your choosing. Don’t Leave Telltale Signs If your mail is visible from the outside, ask a neighbour to come in and put it out of sight. Think about security lights that are motion sensitive. Don’t leave outside lights on all the time particularly during daytime. No Electric Cords Through Windows Your house can look so attractive with lights outside but don’t run the cable from inside the house through a window. An open window is a wonderful prospect for an opportunist burglar. Use an outside power source or if that’s not possible, it’s no outside lights! Police Advice Your home must look as though it’s occupied and we hope that you have found our tips useful. Most police forces will say that many thieves are opportunists so don’t leave doors unlocked or windows open or your house in complete darkness.
